How to Clean Stainless Steel Appliances Without Streaks

Updated 2 min read

Stainless steel shows every fingerprint, and many sprays leave streaks. What works is mild soap, a microfiber cloth, and wiping with the grain.

Quick answer

  • Find the grain, the faint lines in the metal.
  • Wipe with a microfiber cloth dampened with warm water and a drop of dish soap.
  • Rinse with a clean damp cloth, then dry right away.
  • For extra shine, buff in a few drops of mineral or olive oil with the grain.

Everyday cleaning

  1. Find the grain. Look closely for fine brushed lines. Always wipe in that direction.
  2. Wash. Add a drop of dish soap to warm water, dampen a microfiber cloth, wring it out well, and wipe.
  3. Rinse. Wipe again with a cloth dampened in plain water to remove soap.
  4. Dry with a dry microfiber cloth. Water left to dry on its own causes spots.

Shine and fingerprint resistance

Put a few drops of mineral oil (or olive oil) on a clean cloth and buff it in with the grain. Use very little, then wipe off the excess. The thin layer helps hide fingerprints.

Stubborn marks

  • Greasy spots: spray a little white vinegar, wipe, then rinse and dry.
  • Dried food: lay a warm, soapy cloth on it for a few minutes, then wipe.
  • Light scratches: commercial stainless steel scratch kits exist, but they can make things worse on coated finishes. Check your appliance manual.

What to avoid

  • Steel wool, scouring powder, and abrasive pads
  • Chlorine bleach and cleaners with chloride, which can pit the steel
  • Paper towels, which can leave lint
  • Wiping in circles, which leaves visible swirls

Fingerprint-resistant or “black stainless” finishes have a coating. Use only soap and water, and skip oil and vinegar unless the manufacturer says they’re OK.

FAQ

Can I use glass cleaner? It can leave streaks and some contain ammonia. Soap and water is safer for the finish.

Always test a cleaner on a hidden spot first and follow the care label. Never mix bleach with ammonia, vinegar, or other cleaners. Ventilate the room and wear gloves when using strong products.
